The Tool
The foundation of our consulting program is the Highlands Ability Battery (HAB), a research-based tool developed to assess a number of cognitive aptitudes. Based on science, not self-report, the HAB separates aptitudes (natural abilities) from learned skills through objective, timed work samples or performance-based activities.
The HAB is unique in that it measures your abilities based on performance rather than perception. Exercises such as recreating designs from memory, manipulating blocks in space, and putting images in logical sequence are some of the virtual tasks you are asked to perform within a set amount of time. Results based on timed performance are far more reliable than results based on self-perception or personal opinion, so you are truly receiving an accurate picture of your natural gifts, and what tasks may be more challenging.
What’s assessed
Aptitudes and skills are different elements of performance. Aptitudes are the innate abilities that you possess early on. Skills are learned. It’s all a matter of understanding what takes more time, effort, and energy (skills) and what takes less time, effort and energy (aptitudes/abilities).
It’s important to not just ask “what am I good at?” but to understand the context and conditions within which you are “good at” something. The HAB provides a comprehensive and objective view of your abilities, giving you an accurate and honest picture of yourself.
The first step in making decisions for the future is to see where your strengths lie; then we gain tools to help support those abilities that need bolstering.
How it’s assessed
The HAB Evaluates 19 Distinct Abilities Across Three Core Areas:
Are you a Generalist or a Specialist? Do you prefer working independently or collaboratively? Are you self-energized or energized by others?
Personal Style
Driving Abilities
How does your brain process decisions and solve problems?
What unique cognitive strengths—such as visual proficiency, creative orientation, or musical abilities—do you possess?
Specialized Abilities
The objective results of the HAB provide a foundational understanding of how individuals work best, whether excelling in analytical problem-solving, thriving in hands-on spatial work, or demonstrating verbal and linguistic reasoning strengths.

Many assessments provide standardized reports, leaving individuals to interpret complex results alone. We believe in a human-centered approach that ensures clients don’t just receive data, but are guided through the nuances of those reports to gain confidence in who they are, and how they best work and learn.
Our mission is not just to facilitate a test, but to work with you to understand the complexities of how you uniquely think and work. We believe in equipping you with the tools to confidently grow in autonomy, so that you can be actively engaged in your own future.
